New Athens Fire Chief Dave Owens said the driver of a northbound Ford Ranger pickup was killed when the truck collided head-on with a southbound tractor-trailor. The identity of the pickup’s driver, a male, was not immediately released.
Owens said the tractor-trailer involved in the crash is owned by Transport Distribution Company based in Joplin, Mo., and was driven by Gary L. Hollmanen of Hannibal, Mo.
Owens added that a third car drove through the debris field created following the crash, but it was not damaged and its driver was not injured. Hollmanen’s condition was not known.
The investigation was being conducted by Illinois State Police. Illinois Department of Transportation workers blocking off the 2.5-mile section of Illinois 13 rerouted traffic around the scene, sending drivers headed to New Athens west on Robinson School Road, south on George Leilich Road and then east on Illinois 156 to meet Illinois 13 just west of town.
Owens said he expected the roadway to be closed for several hours while an accident-reconstruction team investigated.
