Is there a pipeline near you in southwestern IL? Here’s how to find it and its owner
Several energy pipelines run through southwestern Illinois, but where exactly are they?
Metro-east residents may be asking this question after learning about an oil spill from a pipeline in Edwardsville near the intersection of Illinois 143 and Illinois 159 that flowed into Cahokia Creek.
The federal government has online tools that will show you a map of pipelines in your county and tell you who operates each one.
Both tools are searchable on these websites from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration:
National Pipeline Mapping System at pvnpms.phmsa.dot.gov/PublicViewer
Find Who’s Operating at npms.phmsa.dot.gov/FindWhosOperating.aspx
Here’s what we found out about southwestern Illinois pipelines from the tools:
What we know about Edwardsville pipeline
The pipeline that leaked oil Friday in Edwardsville is operated by Marathon Pipe Line LLC, a company based in Ohio.
It is called the Wood River to Patoka crude oil pipeline, which describes the two points it connects with the flow of oil.
The National Pipeline Mapping System shows the pipeline passes through Madison and Bond counties in the metro-east, including Roxana, Edwardsville and Pocahontas on the way east to Patoka in Marion County. It spans 25.17 miles in Madison County and 17.59 miles in Bond County.
Where are other pipelines in Madison County?
Pipelines stretch the length of Madison County, with a concentration of lines around Wood River, Roxana and Hartford.
The following is a list of 12 other large pipelines, which run continuously for miles within the county like the Wood River to Patoka pipeline. It is not a comprehensive list of pipelines.
Some pipeline systems display in the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s map as segments between a few miles and less than a mile long, making it difficult to identify the full length of that system. The BND excluded those pipelines from this list.
