New Baden man is fifth motorcycle fatality in the metro-east in last month
A New Baden man was killed when he was ejected from his motorcycle after colliding with an SUV.
Mark C. Thompson, 32, was riding his KTM GT SuperDuk motorcycle westbound on Illinois 177 at Circle 8 Road at about 3 p.m. Monday, when the crash occurred, according to Illinois State Police.
Jason P. Foley, 50, of Okawville, was attempting a left-hand turn onto Circle 8 Road from the eastbound lane of the highway and failed to yield to the oncoming traffic, an ISP release stated. Thompson hit Foley’s silver 2021 Chevrolet Traverse and was ejected from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
Neither Foley or his 12-year-old passenger reported injuries. Foley was cited for failure to yield at an intersection.
Thompson is the fifth person to be killed in a motorcycle-related crash in the metro-east in less than three weeks.
Two motorcyclists were killed April 22, when a motorist struck them as they waited at a stop sign in Steeleville, according to a police report. Another man from Godfrey lost control of his motorcycle on Seiler Road and was pronounced dead at the scene April 21. A Wisconsin man died May 6 when his motorcycle overturned in a median on an interstate exit ramp near Collinsville.
There have been 18 motorcyclist fatalities in Illinois so far this year.
