Former metro-east wrestling champion killed, another injured in head-on collision
A 22-year-old man from Wood River was pronounced dead and a second person was transported to an area hospital with injuries following a head-on collision in Madison County Tuesday night.
According to Illinois State Police, Alexander C. Maguire, of Wood River, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Illinois 3 near New Poag Road in his 2014 Nissan Versa Note when he struck another vehicle, a 2017 Hyundai Veloster, head on at about 10:12 p.m.
The driver of the Hyundai, Jeremy G. Packer, 30, of Granite City was taken to a hospital with injuries, state police said in a release. The extent of his injuries and his current condition are not known.
Illinois 3 was shut down for almost five hours.
Maguire was an accomplished wrestler at Roxana High School, qualifying three times for state and placing second in 2019 and third the year before.
The high school’s athletic department acknowledged the death on its Twitter account.
“Deeply saddened to hear that we’ve lost Alex Maguire to a car accident last night,” it said. “He had made an enormous contribution to Roxana High School as a student-athlete. He will be missed….Our Shell Family lost a good one. RIP”
