Coroner IDs woman killed in early morning Fairview Heights fire. ‘A tragedy,’ mayor says.

A 61-year-old woman died in an early morning fire at a Fairview Heights home Thursday.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the woman as Nancy Perkins. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:33 a.m., he said.

“It’s sad and tragic,” said Fairiview Heights Mayor Mark Kupsky. “Our prayers and thoughts go out to the family of the woman who lost her life in the fire this morning.”

Firefighters arrived at the 1400 block of First Avenue at about 5:20 a.m. They approached the home from the back side located on Magdalena Avenue.

“When the fire crews arrived on scene, fire was blowing out of two windows and part of the room,” said French Village Fire Chief Al LaPointe. “It took 15 minutes to put the fire out.”

Perkin’s body was found in a bedroom at the back of the house, he said.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal has been called to assist in the investigation, said LaPointe.

According to Fox 2, Perkins did not live alone in the house, but nobody else was home when first responders arrived.
