Child airlifted from scene of serious crash in Columbia

A female minor was flown from the scene of a two-vehicle crash that occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday on Illinois 3 and Veterans Parkway.

Emergency radio transmissions indicated firefighters had to use extrication equipment to cut at least one of the victims from a vehicle. Fire crews blocked off the highway to allow the helicopter space to land at the crash scene shortly after 9 p.m.

According to Columbia Fire Department Assistant Chief Jim Broshears, a female minor was flown to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis and a male minor from the same vehicle was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Neither the driver of the vehicle containing the children nor the driver of the other involved vehicle were injured, Broshears said.

Information on the types of vehicles involved, who was at fault and any identifying information of those involved was not available as of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Broshears said Illinois 3 in the vicinity of Columbia High School would be closed “for several hours” as police and fire crews investigate the crash.
