Belleville road closure after water main break may last longer than initially thought

A road closure in Belleville may last several weeks after a substantial water main break — longer than initially thought.

The water main break happened Saturday at Centreville Avenue between West Monroe Street and West Adams Street, according to Illinois American Water spokesman Terry Mackin. (Mackin also writes a monthly column for the Belleville News-Democrat.)

The water main split because of the age of the pipe, Mackin said. It was more than 30 years old.

The private water company cut out and replaced a 9-foot section of the pipe on Saturday evening.

Originally, the goal was to reopen the roadway by the end of the week. Mackin said in a Tuesday afternoon update that it may now be closed for a few weeks.

“The damage caused by the water main break and repair was extensive,” Mackin stated. “It will be restored properly, and safely, but may take a little longer than first believed.”

Detours will be marked, according to a message to residents from City Engineer Sal Elkott.
