Belleville water main break causes road closure. Here’s what to know.

Provided

A substantial water main break is causing a week-long road closure in Belleville, according to the city engineer and its water provider.

The water main break happened Saturday at Centreville Avenue between West Monroe Street and West Adams Street, according to Illinois American Water spokesman Terry Mackin. (Mackin also writes a monthly column for the Belleville News-Democrat.)

The water main split because of the age of the pipe, Mackin said. It was more than 30 years old.

The private water company cut out and replaced a 9-foot section of the pipe on Saturday evening.

The road closure is expected to last until the end of the week. Detours will be marked, according to a message to residents from City Engineer Sal Elkott.
