Fairview Heights store among 95 to close after bankruptcy filing of major mall retailer

The Fairview Heights Express is one of 95 across the U.S. that will close as part of Monday’s bankruptcy filing.

A Fairview Heights store known for jeans, dresses and other wardrobe staples will close after an international clothing brand filed bankruptcy.

The closing sale at the St. Clair Square Express store begins Wednesday, a staff member told the BND, but an official closing date has not been set yet. It may depend on how quickly the remaining merchandise sells.

The location in St. Clair Square is one of 95 Express stores that will be closing across the U.S., according to a court filing. Three other Express locations in Illinois will be closing, including:

  • 3333 W. Touhy Ave. in Lincolnwood

  • 17 N. State St. in Chicago

  • 655 W. Diversey Parkway in Chicago

Express has hundreds of stores in the U.S., as well as locations in Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama and Puerto Rico. More than 200 will remain open after the closures.

Express filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday, and Reuters reported the company has seen insufficient demand due to “slowing spending patterns and increased price sensitivity.”

St. Clair Square has seen a few retailers close in the last year, including fashion boutique Versona and New Balance, the BND previously reported.
