A 65-year-old Troy woman apparently suffered a medical emergency and was driving the wrong way before she died in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in Madison County early Wednesday, the coroner said.

Patricia A. Corey was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to a news release from Coroner Steve Nonn.

Corey was going west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 when she then took the exit ramp that led to Interstate 55 “against the flow of traffic,” according to preliminary witness statements cited in the news release.

As Corey was headed north at the 19 mile marker in the southbound lanes of I-55, she “attempted to perform a U-turn in the lanes of traffic when a 2012 Honda Civic collided with her vehicle causing heavy damage to the driver’s side.”

A 2020 Honda Civic then collided with Corey’s vehicle, striking the rear passenger side.

The drivers in the two Hondas suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Nonn said.

Corey may have been “experiencing a diabetic emergency” before the crash, the news release stated.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Meridith Funeral Home in Highland.

The 4:14 a.m. crash is being investigated by Illinois State Police.

Corey was the first of two people killed in crashes on Interstate 55 in the metro-east Wednesday. A motorcyclist died in a collision with a tractor-trailer in East St. Louis at about 12:17 p.m., according to Illinois State Police.
