St. Clair County coroner IDs victim in Fairview Heights crash

The unresponsive victim who police found inside a vehicle following a traffic crash in Fairview Heights Tuesday was identified Wednesday by the St. Clair County Coroner’s office.

Carolyn S. Atwood, 70, of the 300 block of Pine Lake Road in Collinsville, was identified as the victim by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Atwood was pronounced deceased at 11:33 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon.

Fairview Heights police were dispatched to the intersection of North Illinois Street and Salem Place to investigate a report of a traffic accident that happened about 11 a.m., according to a news release from the department.

At the scene, police located one of the persons involved, unresponsive and trapped inside a vehicle.

The victim, now known as Atwood, was extricated from the car by Fairview Heights police officers. They immediately began life -saving measures, the release said.

The Metro-East Crash Assistance Team is assisting with the investigation to determine what led to the accident. The Fairview Heights Police Department offered condolences to Atwood’s family.
