Police escort man from metro-east home after hours-long standoff
A tense standoff between police and a man barricaded in his Monroe County home ended Wednesday morning after nearly 12 hours.
At about 11:50 a.m., neighbors watching from a nearby hilltop heard a loud report from a flashbang grenade. Minutes later, law enforcement officers in camouflage and full SWAT gear led the suspect to a waiting ambulance.
Neighbors gave a BND reporter the name of the man inside the house near Columbia, but it is not being published because he has not been charged with a crime.
Police surrounded the home in the 1800 block of Meadow Court after deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report that a firearm had been stolen from the residence, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
Negotiations continued for nearly 12 hours until law enforcement used the flashbang, a non-lethal explosive device that is used to disorient suspects with a loud noise and bright flash of light.
“There is no immediate threat to the broader community, but out of caution, the area has been secured,” the news release said.
About 20 police cars and an armored personnel carrier were stationed near the home. Some local residents gathered on the nearby hill, watching the scene unfold for hours. Negotiations appeared to reach a standstill as K-9 officers and deputies stood by, many conversing as they waited to take action.
As the man was escorted from the house, he was assessed by emergency medical technicians before being driven to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department in an unmarked police SUV.
Agencies assisting the sheriff’s department included the Columbia Police Department, Waterloo Police Department, Illinois State Police and Columbia EMS.
