Old-school Belleville tavern on West Main Street
Shain’s Tavern opened earlier this month at 1501 W. Main St. in Belleville.
The former League Lounge still has the original bar, sanded and refinished by business owner David Shain. The stained-glass details on the back of the bar are worth checking out as well.
The tavern underwent a two-year renovation that included new flooring, drop ceiling and restrooms, fresh paint everywhere, and a new sign hanging from the front of the building.
Patrons can enjoy the old-school bar with beverages that include Stag, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Michelob Ultra, Bud products and “all the usual,” Shain said.
Basic cocktails are available daily, and Bloody Marys are served on Sundays. Food options include pizza, chips and popcorn.
Other features are a Silver Strike Bowling arcade game console, a Jurassic Park pinball machine, a foosball table, three dartboards and an AMI digital jukebox.
The tavern is among the latest food and beverage establishments to open on Belleville’s West Main Street between the public square and 17th Street.
The Harp Pub opened in December, and The Roundabout Bar & Grill is slated to open this spring.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week. Find info about drink specials and new beverage offerings on the Shain’s Tavern Facebook page.
A closing restaurant will soon return with a new concept
A Madison County Joe’s Pizza and Pasta location will close and soon reopen as a sports-themed establishment.
Owners of the location at 17 Eastgate Plaza, East Alton, announced the closing via the restaurant’s social media on Jan. 13.
The same day, a new restaurant announced on its own Facebook page that The Penalty Box Bar and Grill is coming soon to East Alton.
The last day of business for Joe’s Pizza is Saturday, Jan. 31. The restaurant had already reduced hours to Thursday through Sunday.
Alex Matthews, marketing and technology manager for the businesses, said owners Corey and Kayla McMahan are ending their franchise deal with Joe’s Pizza for this location and will convert it to a sports bar.
In addition to food and drinks, The Penalty Box will offer pool tables, darts, live music and more.
“We’re really excited about this new concept,” said Matthews.
An opening date for The Penalty Box has not yet been announced.
Along with the East Alton restaurant, the McMahans own Joe’s Pizza and Pasta locations in Mascoutah, Edwardsville, Godfrey and Jerseyville, as well as The Clubhouse Sports Lounge + Kitchen in Edwardsville.
