Belleville police are investigating the death of a Belleville man found along Illinois 161 early Wednesday, though authorities now say preliminary findings indicate the death was not a homicide.

Shawn R. Overmiller, 40, of Windsor Drive in Belleville, was found near Illinois 161 and Sullivan Drive about 5:22 a.m., after officers were called to the area for a report of an unconscious man on the side of the road, police said.

Police and emergency medical personnel found Overmiller dead at the scene, according to the department and St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

An autopsy has been completed as part of the ongoing investigation. Preliminary autopsy findings indicate Overmiller appears to have died from a drug overdose, police said. Confirmation is pending toxicology testing.

Belleville police said an adult male is in custody at the department related to criminal activity discovered during the investigation, and detectives will seek charges through the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released when appropriate, police said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Belleville Police Department.
