A Swansea teen has died from injuries he suffered in a car crash on Old Collinsville Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department identified the teen as Nicholas Kraus, 18, of Swansea.

The preliminary accident report indicates a 2006 gray Ford Fusion driven by Kraus, which was traveling south on Old Collinsville Road, slid into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a 2008 Cadillac, according to Capt. Scott Weymouth with the sheriff’s department.

The identity of the woman driving the Cadillac was not released by police. She was treated at the scene.

Weather was likely a factor in the crash as heavy rain fell Tuesday afternoon. “He (Kraus) lost control of the vehicle and went into her lane of traffic,” Weymouth said on Wednesday.

Kraus was taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville and then transferred to Saint Louis University Hospital.

Weymouth said Kraus died of blunt-force trauma, according to the St. Louis medical examiner’s office, pending results of other tests.

The sheriff’s department investigation into the crash was continuing Wednesday. The Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction team responded to the scene as well, and was working on its report, which Weymouth said takes “quite some time.”
