Person found dead after fiery Madison County vehicle crash

Alton police say a person was found dead in a pickup truck that crashed and burned late Sunday in Alton.

Officers were called about 11:22 p.m. to the 2200 block of State Street, where they found the truck fully engulfed in flames in the front yard of a residence, according to a police department release.

Investigators said the truck had been traveling north on State Street when it left the roadway, hit a parked, unoccupied vehicle and then struck a tree. The Alton Fire Department put out the fire, and human remains of one person were found inside the vehicle, police said.

The Madison County coroner took custody of the remains and is working to confirm the person’s identity and determine the cause of death. No other injuries were reported.
