Road work could slow metro-east traffic this weekend. Here’s where to avoid
Roads in St. Clair and Madison counties are slated for 13 closures and construction projects this weekend as work continues on state roads.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced 13 ongoing and upcoming road construction projects in St. Clair County and 9 projects in Madison County as part of the statewide Rebuild Illinois program.
The program was introduced in 2019 to address a backlog of deferred maintenance on state roads. But department spokesperson Paul Wappel said the revolving program includes projects expected to continue through summer 2028.
Current and upcoming road construction projects through IDOT are expected to total about $960 million.
“Because of the work we’ve done in the General Assembly, IDOT is investing nearly $850 million in the metro-east — and that’s just on projects that are currently running,” Assistant House Majority Leader Jay Hoffman said in a statement. “That number alone cannot quantify the positive impact on families, communities and union labor involved with getting these projects out the door.”
Here’s the construction you can expect on metro-east state roads this weekend:
St. Clair County
Ramp closed for bridge repairs at Interstate 70 over Interstate 55/64 in East St. Louis
The ramp from Interstate 64 to westbound Interstate 70 is closed this weekend as part of a $2 million bridge repair project.
Department spokesperson Dawn Johnson said the bridge repair is expected to wrap up this summer, but the ramp will remain closed until mid-October.
Caseyville Road closed near Illinois Route 157
Caseyville Road will be closed this weekend from South Morrison Avenue near Illinois Route 157 to Grandview Drive in Collinsville.
The road is expected to reopen Thursday, but construction is slated to continue through August.
Lane closures along Interstate 64
Interstate 64 from Illinois routes 157 to 158 will have intermittent lane closures for two separate road construction projects.
Nearly $77 million of milling, resurfacing and bridge repairs will cause intermittent lane closures from Route 157 to Green Mount Road at least through August, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Lane widening from Green Mount Road to Route 158 will also cause intermittent lane closures through next summer.
Johnson said the additional lanes are expected to increase capacity and ease traffic during peak hours.
Lane closures along Illinois Route 177 in Mascoutah
Route 177 in Mascoutah from County Road to Mine Road will have daily lane closures with flaggers until early August.
The closures will make way for an $835,000 resurfacing project along Mascoutah Road.
Construction along Illinois Route 159 in Belleville
Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures on north and southbound lanes on Illinois Route 159 this weekend between Route 13 and Washington Street downtown.
The lane closures are for routine repairs, according to a release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The project is expected to wrap up by the end of the month.
Construction, eventual lane closures on Route 203
Traffic along Illinois Route 203 will be reduced to one lane between Ohio Road and the Madison County line starting Monday for a $13.8 million bridge replacement project.
There is currently road construction on Route 203 between Interstate 55 and Bend Road in Madison County.
Monday ramp closures at Interstates 64 and 70
Two ramps at the interchange of Interstates 64 and 70 will be closed starting Monday for a $3.8 million bridge rehabilitation project, according to a Tuesday release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Johnson said ramps from westbound I-64 to westbound I-70 and one lane from westbound I-55/70 to westbound I-70 will close Monday with an expected reopening date of Sept. 3, weather permitting.
Madison County
Interstate 55/70 resurfacing closure
Eastbound and westbound legs of Interstate 55/70 will undergo separate, 24-day closures during a $29 million resurfacing and bridge repair project later this summer.
The Illinois Department of Transportation road closure dashboard shows that those road closures have not begun. But a release from the department says drivers can expect some lane closures during off-peak hours.
The project spans from near Fairmount Park Casino & Racing to just under half a mile east of Illinois Route 159 in Collinsville and includes ramps at Black Lane and Illinois routes 157 and 159.
Interstate 270 lane closures
Johnson said traffic on westbound Interstate 270 will be reduced to one lane beginning 6 a.m. Saturday and ending 6 p.m. Sunday.
The lane closures extend from Illinois Route 3 to the Mississippi River.
Interstate 255 resurfacing lane closures
Drivers should expect lane closures along Interstate 255 from the St. Clair County line to Interstate 270 while the road undergoes a resurfacing project into the fall.
Johnson said there will be single-lane closures during the day and double-lane closures at night.
Road closure at intersection of Illinois Routes 162/157
The intersection at Illinois Routes 162 and 157 in Glen Carbon is currently closed for a $17.5 million reconstruction and bridge replacement.
The current closure is expected to continue through October along Illinois Route 157 and at its disjointed intersection with Route 162.
Officials expect Route 157 and eastbound Route 162 to reopen, while westbound Route 162 will remain closed through next summer.
The Cabin at Judy Creek and a nearby parking lot for the MCT Nature Trail are expected to stay open during the closures, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Johnson said drivers can expect marked detours.
Off-peak lane closures along Route 3
Johnson said drivers should anticipate daily lane closures during off-peak hours while Illinois Route 3 is resurfaced in Madison County.
The $25 million project includes two sections: one from Northgate Industrial Drive in Granite City to Broadway Street in Venice, and another from McKinley Bridge to Illinois Route 3 in Venice.
The resurfacing is expected to wrap up by the end of August.
