Police ID body found in Mississippi River

Police have identified the body of a man found in the Mississippi River over the weekend.

Mickey Heflin, 38, was from West Alton, Mo. According to autopsy results, his cause of death was drowning. Toxicology results are pending.

Authorities have not said if they thought Heflin’s death was suspicious or accidental.

His body was found in the river Saturday near Venice, according to Illinois State Police reports. They described the body as that of a white male with distinguishing tattoos on his chest including one that reads “Zachary” and another that reads “Family Forever.”

The body was recovered by the Madison Fire Department. Police did not say how they positively identified Heflin.

While authorities now know who the victim is, they are still trying to piece together the last few hours of his life.
