A pedestrian who tried to cross Illinois 161 in Belleville shortly after 1 a.m. Friday was struck by a vehicle and eventually died.
A Belleville Police statement said the driver of an eastbound vehicle notified police after striking the male victim despite attempting to avoid the collision that occurred 200 feet to the east of the intersection with Frank Scott Parkway.
Police said the victim appeared to be trying to cross the highway from north to south. The man who was struck was transported to Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis, where he died.
The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of his family.
No citations have been issued, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
