Don’t Miss This: Inmate killed at Madison County Jail

Don’t miss these stories Tuesday at BND.com:

▪ An inmate was killed at the Madison County Jail on Monday, and state police said they had a suspect in custody.

John E. Newsome Sr., 61, of Madison was found dead at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville Monday morning. There was apparent trauma, according to police, and Master Sgt. Mark Doiron confirmed that at 11 a.m. Monday, Madison County Sheriff John Lakin requested that the Illinois State Police assume the investigation. He said they believe his death was a homicide, and they had a suspect in custody.

▪ Longtime school board member John Kasper resigned on Monday night, adding more uncertainty to the possibility of the penny sales tax being on the November ballot.

The Belleville District 201 school board tabled a vote on whether to recommend the penny sales tax to be on the November ballot before the voters. That issue now goes back to the Finance Committee. Kasper was one of three members on that committee.

▪ The Madison County Electoral Board has eliminated enough signatures that independent candidate Tyler Oberkfell may not make the final ballot in November for the county board, though the final decision is still pending.

Donald Moore of Troy is the Republican candidate to represent District 2 to the Madison County Board after defeating incumbent Republican Roger Alons. Moore’s opponent is Oberkfell, also of Troy, who filed his petition to run in the November election with 273 signatures.

Moore filed an objection to Oberkfell’s petition, alleging that 55 of the 232 signatures were from people who were not properly registered.
