Don’t Miss This: Sutt found guilty in metro-east rape case

Don’t miss these stories Thursday at BND.com:

▪ Jerry Sutt was found guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl and tying up her brother after 50 minutes of deliberation by a Madison County jury.

The trial concluded with testimony of the teenage girl he allegedly raped, her brother he allegedly tied up, and a recording of a phone call in which he threatened to kill the entire family. The jury received the case at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, and returned its verdict in less than an hour.

Sutt, 53, was accused of entering his former girlfriend’s home in rural Collinsville on Sept. 18, 2013, tying up two teenagers and sexually assaulting the 15-year-old girl.

▪ A preliminary audit of Teamsters Local 50’s financial records uncovered problems “severe enough” to warrant an immediate takeover of the local union in what’s known as an emergency trusteeship, an International Brotherhood of Teamsters spokesman said Tuesday.

Local 50 president Scott Alexander and the union’s four other officers were removed from their posts Friday. A complete audit of the local’s records is ongoing at the union hall at 1609 N. Illinois St. in Swansea.

An emergency trusteeship was ordered by IBT General President James P. Hoffa, who in a notice posted Friday wrote he had “received a series of credible reports from members and officers of Local 50 alleging improper use of Union resources and other violations” of union rules.

▪ Although absent from the 2016 Republican National Convention, Hillary Clinton’s name garners as much notoriety from the crowd as the Republican nominee Donald Trump’s wins him cheers. The Illinois delegation, however, sometimes split about whose name should be leveraged more often.

Clinton is decidedly unpopular among the Illinois delegation and its guests, but not all of the delegation on Tuesday believed the continued barrage against the presumptive Democratic nominee was ultimately beneficial.
