Metro-east man arrested after reported burglary, police pursuit
A Belleville man has been charged with burglary more than a week after authorities said they received a report of suspects taking items from a home near East St. Louis and then fleeing.
The case was in reference to a burglary that was reported in the 2900 block of Trendley Avenue on July 10.
The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office along with the U.S. Marshals Service took one suspect into custody on July 14 at his Belleville home. He was identified by the sheriff’s office as 20-year-old Darrell J. Gilkey. Authorities said Gilkey was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant.
The case was presented to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office on July 21. Gilkey was charged with one count of residential burglary, and his bail amount was set at $200,000. Gilkey remained in the county jail as of Monday.
The sheriff’s office said previously that one other person had been taken to jail following the reported burglary and police pursuit on July 10. Authorities said at least three suspects took off in a vehicle and went into St. Louis. The vehicle had stopped in the area of Tucker Street and Chouteau Avenue.
After a brief foot pursuit, Alorton police and St. Louis police apprehended a 26-year-old female driver, who was accused of fleeing and eluding police.
Two escaped on foot, carrying what appeared to be firearms, according to authorities. Authorities believed Gilkey was one of the two passengers in the vehicle who escaped.
Investigators said they were continuing to follow up on leads in their search for a third suspect in the case.
