Belleville is one step closer to getting an Aldi grocery store. Here’s the latest
A new Aldi grocery store took another stop forward when the Belleville City Council approved the site plans for the project with a 16-0 vote Monday.
The next step will be to annex the proposed site, which is located at 1709 Carlyle Ave., into the city. That could happen as soon as Jan. 3.
“We are very excited to bring the first Aldi to Belleville,” said developer Mitch Goltz of GW Properties in a phone interview.
Goltz said Aldi has been looking at bringing a store location to Belleville for some time and that being able to do this now was a matter of “if you dream it, it will come.”
He said he’s excited that the government in Belleville is just as enthusiastic about the development as he is and is grateful for their support.
The site plans were previously approved for recommendation to the council by the planning committee earlier this month with an 8-0 vote.
Before Aldi can begin construction, the site has to be annexed by the city.
Clifford Cross, the city’s director of economic development, planning and zoning, said a public hearing on the proposed annexation is expected to be held during the Jan. 3 council meeting. The council will vote on the annexation later during the same meeting.
If the site is annexed, city officials will review Aldi’s construction plans as part of the building permit process.
Goltz said the plan is to break ground in late spring, adding that he and his team will work diligently to get the store built for a late 2023 opening.
