Official releases ID of Belleville teen killed in I-70 crash in Missouri
The identity of a Belleville teenager who died in a crossover crash on Interstate 70 in St. Charles County, Missouri, was released Wednesday.
Dalton Lawrence Vonderheide, 17, died in the crash on Monday, according to a statement from Kathleen Diebold Hargrave, who is the division director for the Office of the Regional Medical Examiner in eastern Missouri.
The teen was driving east on I-70 near Wentzville Parkway when he lost control of his 1993 Dodge Stealth at 11:33 a.m. Monday, traveled across the lanes and struck the front left of a motor home, according to an updated report from the Missouri Highway Patrol. After hitting the motor home, the sports car continued into the median, went through a cable barrier and entered the westbound lanes, where a 2018 Mack truck hit the passenger side of the Dodge Stealth, according to the report.
The initial report from the Missouri Highway Patrol on Monday did not include the information about the motor home.
The victim, later identified as Vonderheide, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:42 a.m. by first-responders, according to information from the highway patrol and Hargrave.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Vonderheide’s family in paying funeral costs.
No other injuries were reported in the three-vehicle crash.
The highway patrol said a 67-year-old man from Sycamore, Illinois, was driving the 2011 Spartan motor home and a 34-year-old man from Aiken, South Carolina, was driving the Mack truck.
The Dodge Stealth had extensive damage, the truck had moderate damage and the motor home had minor damage.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Vonderheide’s family in paying funeral costs.
“Dalton was full of life, laughter, and promise — a kind soul, a loving son, and friend to so many,” the page states. “His warmth, smile, and energy left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.”
