Highland defeats Carterville to claim Salem Thanksgiving Tournament Championship

A week after starting the 2019-20 campaign with a win in Salem, the Lady Bulldogs finished off their stay in the Salem Thanksgiving Tournament at the top of the tourney field, thanks to a resounding 49-31 win over Carterville in the tournament championship game Saturday, Nov. 30, at Salem High School.

Kirsten Taylor led the Lady Bulldogs with a team-high 18 points and Bella LaPorta added 14 points.

Highland, which won the tournament for the second straight season, improved to 3-1.

Hockey

Highland falls to Edwardsville

The Bulldogs returned to MVCHA play Monday, Nov. 25, with a league contest against the Edwardsville Tigers club.

Despite a strong early offensive output and a late charge, Highland fell 6-5.

Lucas Korte paced the Bulldogs offense with a hat trick and two assists. Dominic Emig scored a goal and Kaiden Miles tallied a goal and an assist. Nolan Geest and Reese Tackett also had assists.

Highland dropped to 1-6.

Boys Basketball

Effingham 73, Highland 38

It was a rocky start of the 2019-20 season for the Bulldogs cagers at Effingham St. Anthony on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Highland, in its first game under new coach Deryl Cunningham fell by behind by double digits in the first quarter and ultimately fell to Effingham 73-38 in the opening round of Green Pool play in the Effingham St. Anthony Turkey Tournament.

Effingham St. Anthony 68, Highland 25

In their second Green Pool play game, Highland fell behind early and could not keep close to Effingham St. Anthony, which pulled away from HHS for a 68-25 second-round victory Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Highland 59, Tolono Unity 43

After two poor outings, Highland earned its first win of the season, rolling past Tomy Unity 59-43.

Breese Central, Highland 44

Highland wrapped up tourney play with a fifth-place game against Breese Central on Saturday, Nov. 30. The Bulldogs battled but lost to the Cougars 51-44 to finish sixth in the tournament. HHS dropped to 1-3.

Wrestling

Highland defeats Pinckneyville, Centralia, and Effingham in the season opener

The Highland wrestling team started the season Tuesday, Nov. 26, with a quad meet home win over Pinckneyville, Centralia, and Effingham.

HHS defeated Pinckneyville 48-21, Centralia 54-18, and Effingham 48-34 to clam the meet. New Bulldog senior heavyweight Trevor Zobrist won his first-ever match with a pin. Junior Colby Davis got his season started well with a pin at 160 pounds.

HHS grapplers come up short in tri-match at Marion

The young and developing Highland wrestling team trekked south Saturday, Nov. 30, for a tri-match with Cape Girardeau Central and Marion. Highland fell to Cape Central 53-28 and then lost 49-24 to host Marion. Highland slipped to 2-2 in dual match competition.
