Girls Basketball

Highland 75, Taylorville 34

Second-seeded Highland started off the Class 3A regional in Jerseyville in strong fashion Feb. 17 thanks to a convincing 75-34 win over seventh-seed Taylorville.

HHS came out fast and rolled to a 49-6 lead at the half to put the game away.

Bella LaPorta scored 13 points and Ellie Brown and Megan Kronk added 12 points each to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who ultimately captured the regional title.

Kronk, Hadowski advance to 3-point contest sectional round

Kronk and Lydia Hadowski kept their success in the IHSA 3-point shooting competition going Thursday at Jerseyville High School.

Kronk nailed 12-of-15 three-balls and Hadowski knocked down 8-of-15 treys to advance to the sectional round of the competition.

Boys Basketball

Gibault 32, Highland 30

The Highland boys basketball team turned in arguably its best defensive effort Feb. 18 at home against Gibault Catholic High School.

Unfortunately, the visiting Hawks made just enough plays at the end to deny Highland a victory as Gibault nipped HHS 32-30.

Jerseyville 54, Highland 38

Highlnd ventured to Jerseyville on Friday for a Mississippi Valley Conference road game and for the first 16 minutes gave the Panthers all they wanted and more.

HHS battled Jerseyville to a 13-13 tie after one quarter and trailed just 23-20 at halftime. But Jerseyville erupted for 21 third-quarter points and held the Bulldogs to just 18 second-half points as HHS fell to the Panthers 54-38.

Highland returns to action at home with a Senior Night home finale against Civic Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wrestling

HHS grapplers struggle at Mascoutah Class 2A individual sectional

Highland took two wrestlers to the Class 2A individual sectional tournament at Mascoutah High Schoool on Feb. 15.

The day ended up being a tough one for Tanner Schranz and Alex Reid. The duo wrestled as hard as possible but it wasn’t enough as both wrestlers failed to advance from the sectional round.

Schranz went 0-2 in his matches. Reid went 1-2 in the tournament after winning the first match and losing the final two bouts.

Benny Mitchell was slated to wrestle in the sectional at 152 pounds but was unable to go due to an injury.
