Girls Basketball
Highland 66, Mount Vernon 30
The Lady Bulldogs continued their strong postseason run with another top-shelf effort on the court Monday. Highland started fast and never looked back in racing to a 66-30 win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Sectionals at Effingham High School.
HHS led 23-6 after one quarter and held a commanding 42-11 lead at the half.
Three Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures as Megan Kronk led with 15 points followed by Ellie Brown with 13 points and Bella LaPorta added 12 points. Highland ultimately captured the sectional crown.
Girls Bowling
A trip to the IHSA state tournament the weekend of Feb. 21 ended on a good note for the Lady Bulldogs bowling team as Highland finished ninth at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford.
Other top local finishers included Belleville East in fourth place, Collinsville in fifth place, and Mascoutah in sixth place.
Highland finished the tournament with 10,909 pins in 60 games to take ninth overall in the field.
Girls Track
Kesner wins shot put at Mizzou Track and Field Indoor Series Indoor Championship
Highland’s Taylor Kesner took a break from the Lady Bulldogs postseason basketball run to get in a little action in the shot put.
Kesner, who made it to the state meet last year in the shot, showed her mettle against Feb. 22 at the Mizzou Track and Field Indoor Series as she won the shot put with a first-place throw of 38-9.25 inches.
Josie Hapack also did well in the shot, as she notched a personal record throw of 32-2.25.
Boys Track
Rosen, Sands excel at Triad Indoor Invite
Highland boys tracksters Easton Rosen and Connor Sands made the most of their 2020 track debut.
The pair traveled with the team to the Triad Invite at Principia College on Feb. 22 and had big days.
Rosen won the open 1,600 race, while Sands showed his moxie in the jumping events as he took second place in the long jump. Sands also placed second in the triple jump.
Boys Basketball
Civic Memorial 53, Highland 33
On Tuesday, Civic Memorial came into Highland, started quick and spoiled the Bulldogs Senior Night by handing them a 53-33 Mississippi Valley Conference loss.
Triad 65, Highland 37
Highland finished the regular season at MVC archrival Triad on Friday and fell 65-37.
Ninth-seeded Highland (2-29) begins Class 3A Regional playoff play on Monday with a first-round game against eighth seed Cahokia at 7 p.m. at Triad High School.
