Highland Arts Council to hold Scarecrow Search ArtWalk in place of annual event

Autumn is always a time of change, leaves transforming into glimmering shades of orange and red and yellow as the temperatures take on the crisp feel, indicating the seasons are evolving.

The year 2020 has been many things, but mostly it has been a time of change as humanity collectively navigates uncharted territories again and again.

The Highland Arts Council, too, had to adapt and change in light of the current COVID-19 situation, and that change meant canceling Art in the Park, the council’s major annual event. The cancellation of one event led to the adoption of a new one: Scarecrow Search ArtWalk.

The Scarecrow Search ArtWalk will lead your team on an adventure through the community, following the Highland’s ArtWalk, which is available all year. On Saturday, Oct. 10, the Scarecrow Search ArtWalk will guide you to explore the Highland community and discover the beautiful artwork displayed around city.

The object of the game is to visit each of the pieces of artwork on the list identified by a scarecrow and snap a picture of the group with the artwork. After visiting the artwork, people will instant message all their photos to Highland Arts Council on Facebook.

The committee will assign points for each photo to determine the winners of two prizes. The team with the most likes on Facebook will receive the People’s Choice Prize. So, people should ask their friends to like their post of photos and Highland Arts Council’s page.

Registration & Play

Registration will be at the entrance to Highland’s Lindendale Park (the corner of Park Hill Drive and Lindenthal Avenue) — the usual site of Art in the Park — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10. Teams can play from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., which is the deadline for photo submissions.

Teams

  • Teams may include as many as can safely/legally fit into one vehicle. There are no age limits. All are welcome.

  • Be creative. Come up with a unique team name for the group.

  • All team members must be included in all photos (except for the photographer). People may rotate the photographer as they choose. Any photographs that do not include team members will not be considered for prizes.

  • Each team must include one team member over the age of 18 as the official \driver.

The Cost

The cost is $20 per carload.

The Photos

All photographs must be taken and sent by IM to Highland Arts Council’s Facebook page by 6 p.m. Oct. 10. Any photos sent after 6 p.m. will not be considered for prizes.

Social Media

HAC will post each team’s pictures on their Facebook page. The team with the most “LIKES” by midnight Oct. 10 will win the People’s Choice Prize. So people should share their post when they see it and encourage their friends and family to “LIKE” their team pictures on the HAC Facebook page.

The Committee & Points

A committee made up of HAC members will award points. Each picture with all team members will be awarded five points. At their sole discretion, the committee may award up to three additional points based on the creativity of their photograph. All decisions are final.

The Prizes

  • First prize: $50

  • Second prize: $30

  • People’s Choice: $25

  • Children under age 10 will receive a coloring book featuring some of the artwork and a pack of crayons, courtesy of HAC.

  • Winners will be announced by 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, on the HAC Facebook page. Checks will be mailed to the addresses provided.

Social Distancing

All locations will be outdoors, but team members are advised to maintain social distancing from those not on their team and to wear face masks as appropriate.
