Alton police investigating “suspicious” death after man’s body found in home Monday

Alton police were investigating after a man was found dead inside his home Monday morning.

Investigators are calling man’s death “suspicious.”

Just after 8 a.m., officers responded to 1129 Highland Ave. for a welfare check, Alton police said. Officers found the man dead inside. His identity is being withheld until family members are notified, but police confirmed he was living at the house.

Current and former members of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis were assisting Alton police in the investigation. In a statement, Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons said the department is conducting interviews, collecting evidence and following up on all available leads.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit were also assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Alton Police Department at 618-463-3505 or the anonymous tip line at 618-465-5948.

The suspicious death is the second in Madison County in as many days. The Major Case Squad was activated in Edwardsville when well-known area attorney and businessman Randy Gori was found dead in his home Sunday. A “strong” person of interest was taken into custody Sunday evening. A press conference regarding Gori’s death was scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, after the BND print deadline.
