Man shot in unincorporated Belleville after surprising suspected car burglars

Police found a 35-year old man with a gun shot wound to his leg on Leo Drive in unincorporated Belleville early Tuesday morning.

The victim suffered a non-life threatening wound and was taken to a nearby hospital, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Capt. Bruce Fleshren said. The suspects, meanwhile, got away in a “small white vehicle.”

Fleshren said in a release that deputies were called to the scene at 6:15 a.m. on the report that shots had been fired.

“The homeowner had tried to start his vehicle with the remote and it would not start. He then went to check on the vehicle and found two persons between his cars,” Fleshren said. “One of the persons rose up and fired at east two shots at him from a handgun,” striking him in the leg Fleshren said.

The two suspects were described only as black males with hoodies.

The sheriff’s department also received several reports of other vehicle burglaries in the same area, “around Berkshire Drive,” Fleshren said.

The St. Clair County Sherffi’s department is seeking information from residents of the neighborhood, especially those who may have security cameras.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 825-5204.
