State Police identify type of car suspected in hit-and-run that killed Belleville man

Illinois State Police have identified the car they say was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a Belleville man this month.

Police are still investigating the identity of the driver, their only suspect.

Just after midnight on Feb. 4, state police responded to St. Clair Avenue and Illinois 157 for a report of a dead body on the eastbound shoulder of the road. There, they found the victim, 39-year-old Craig L. Boone, who had been struck by a car that fled the scene.

On Thursday, Illinois State Police Trooper Josh Korando said investigators identified the vehicle that killed Boone from an analysis of debris found at the scene.

A piece of the passenger-side headlight is consistent with a red Pontiac G5 or Chevrolet Cobalt that was manufactured between 2007 and 2010, Korando said.

Boone’s sister, Charity Ealy Shonk, told the Belleville News-Democrat following a memorial service that her brother was a kind man with a good heart.

She urged anyone with information to call police.

To the person who struck him and left him to die on the road, Shonk said, “shame on you.”

“How could you just leave somebody’s family member there to die alone?” she said. “I hope you can feel the anguish that all of Craig’s family is feeling.”

Anyone with information can call Illinois State Police at 618-315-7307.
