‘This killing has to stop,’ says a Fairview Heights mother who found her son dead
Marquita Mitchell called out to her son when she heard the gunshots Wednesday night.
He didn’t answer, she said, and she rushed to the garage that he used as a gym and a place to listen to music at their Lakeland Hills Drive home in Fairview Heights. She found her 18-year-old son, Kameron J. Dorsey, laying on the ground in the garage.
Dorsey was pronounced dead at 9:20 p.m. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is investigating the shooting.
“I’m truly lost for words. I really don’t know what to say,” Mitchell said Thursday.
“I never would’ve thought something like this would happen to mine. I have seen this happen to a lot of young kids,” Mitchell said, pausing. “When it hits home, it really hurts.
“You can send out condolences for a family when you hear something like this happened in their family. But, when it comes to yours, there are no words to express your feelings,” Mitchell said. “It’s very hard.”
Mitchell described her son as fun-loving and gifted. “Everybody loved him. He was a little character,” she said “He loved his family. He was over protective of his 6-year-old brother. He was gifted, talented and very smart.”
Dorsey loved football, but was better at basketball. He stopped playing high school football when he was diagnosed with epilepsy.
Dorsey had so much potential and never had a chance to fulfill his goals in life, Mitchell said.
“This killing has to stop. It’s destroying families, and young people are destroying each other. This just has to stop,” Mitchell said, filled with emotion.
No arrests have been made in Dorsey’s shooting death.
