Convicted felon charged with New Baden carjacking

A man New Baden police were seeking in connection with a car jacking was captured in Fairmont City shortly after they say he took a woman’s car at gun point.

JeQuan Hill, of 3841 Bingham Ave. St. Louis, Mo., was charged Wednesday by the St.Clair County State’s Attorney’s office with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, and felon in possession of a weapon. He is currently being held at the St. Clair County Jail on $300,000 bond.

According to a release, New Baden police were dispatched to 504 West Hanover Tuesday.

Gary Brewer, deputy commander of the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force, said a woman in her mid-40s was sitting in her parked, running car on the Subway parking lot when the suspect pointed a gun at her.

The woman, who is not being identified, complied with the suspect, who fled toward Interstate 64 in the 2012 Chevrolet Cruse.

Other law enforcement agencies were alerted to the crime on the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network. Police spotted the car on I-64 and followed Hill to Fairmont City, police said. Brewer said Hill abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Attempts to locate the suspect using a K-9 were not successful, New Baden police said.

“Later on, after receiving, tip from a citizen, Fairmont police located the suspect walking the streets,” Brewer said. “For their safety, the officers patted the suspect down and found a loaded 45 pistol on him. They also located some of the victim’s property in his possession.”

The female victim was not injured.

The incident is the second this week in which St. Louis residents were charged with carjackings in the metro-east.

On Monday, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Kaleb R. Holmes, 18, and Alexis N. Brown, 23, each with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, one count of armed robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm after the carjacking of a Collinsville Uber driver Sunday.
