Man stabbed to death in Belleville apartment, girlfriend in custody
Police say they have taken into custody the girlfriend of a man found stabbed to death in his Belleville apartment early Sunday morning.
St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the victim as Jeffrey Dent, 49, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:05 a.m. The apartment is located on the 300 block of I Street.
Belleville Police Lt. Todd Keilbach said officers were dispatched to the scene following a report that “a male in the residence was stabbed and unconscious.”
When police arrived on scene they found a 34-year old woman and child inside the residence waiting for them, Keilbach said.
“Officers were directed to a back bedroom, where they located a 49-year old male subject bleeding from an apparent stab wound to his torso,” Keilbach said.
EMS personnel were unable to resuscitate Dent.
The woman in the apartment complained of injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, Keilbach said. She was later taken into custody and, as of Sunday, was being held by Belleville Police.
Detectives and crime scene investigators are continuing to investigate the incident. Police are not looking for any other suspects, Keilbach said. The girlfriend’s name has not been released. No charges have been filed.
