Two hit by gunfire in East St. Louis. Neither was the target, police say

A man and a woman were shot in East St. Louis Friday afternoon. Neither was the intended target of the gunfire, police say.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said the shooting happened about 2:45 p.m at 18th Street and Missouri Avenue.

“A man was on the gas station lot about to pump some gas when he was struck by a bullet. A woman who was driving by was also struck,” Patterson sad.

Both were transported to an area hospital, though their wounds do not appear to be life-threatening, Patterson said.

Patterson would not say how police knew the two were not the shooter’s intended target.

“We have an active investigation going on,” he said. “I am not at liberty to go into any details about what we know or don’t know.”
