Man with gun flees from Cahokia police, still at large

A man passed out behind the wheel of his car awoke as Cahokia police officers approached him and sped off with a firearm on display late Wednesday night.

A chase began just before midnight near the intersection of Jerome and Nash and ended when the unidentified man crashed his silver Nissan in East St. Louis. But the driver was able to escape on foot and the weapon was not recovered.

“The silver Nissan was parked with a firearm visible so the police officers who saw the situation attempted to wake him and he saw the police officers approaching the driver’s side of the car and he fled from the scene,” Cahokia Chief David Landmann said. “The driver ran off the road in the 1200 block of Mississippi Avenue in East St. Louis.”

Landmann said police believe they have identified the driver and are seeking him as a person of interest.
