One killed, two others hurt in Sunday night shooting in East St. Louis

Three men and a woman were sitting outside of an apartment building Sunday evening when shots were fired suddenly from the gun of an unknown assailant.

Three people were hit by the gunfire and one of them died.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye identified the victim as Dequarius O. Foster, 42. He was pronounced at the scene, 1320 St. Louis Ave., at 10:05 p.m., Dye said.

East St. Louis Police were dispatched to the apartment complex at 8:36 p.m. in reference to the gunfire, East St. Louis Patrol Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said.

Patterson, who is also commander of Investigations, said when officers arrived “they located three people who had been shot. One of them was not breathing.”

A witness told police the three were sitting outside the apartment when the unknown gunman stood at the end of the apartment building and starting shooting in their direction, Patterson said.

Police do not have a suspect.

As is customary for East St. Louis, Illinois State Police are taking the lead in the investigation.

Patterson said anyone with information is urged to call East St. Louis police, Illinois State Police, or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS. This anonymous police tip line pays up to $1,000 for information which leads to an arrest.

Foster is the 24th person murdered in East St. Louis this year.
