Shooting in west Belleville neighborhood wasn’t random, police say

A shooting on Thursday in a west Belleville neighborhood was not a random act of violence, police said.

Police were called to the first block of Chamberlain Court in the Ogles neighborhood at 12:25 p.m. on the report that a 28-year-old man had been shot. Once at the scene , officers learned the wounded man, whose name has not been released, had already been taken to a local hospital by a family member, Belleville Police Lt. Todd Keilbach said.

“The victim was later air lifted to a St. Louis hospital for further evaluation and treatment,” Keilbach said.

Keilbach said police do not know the extent of the victim’s injuries, nor have they established a motive for the shooting. But based on conversations detectives had with the victim and witnesses, it has been determined the shooting “was not a random act of violence,” said Keilbach.

“Preliminary information indicates the victim and the suspect know each other,” he said.

Police are still investigating the incident, Keilbach said. Neither the victim’s nor suspect’s names have been released.

A group of people gathered on the front lawn of the home shortly after the shooting. None of them wanted to comment but one man said they had given statements to the police.

This is the second shooting the Ogles neighborhood this year. Marsean D. Hill, 25, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm in the shooting of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend on Feb. 4.
