Belleville police investigating after two men shot at apartment complex

Belleville police are investigating after two men were shot Monday afternoon at an apartment complex.

The Belleville Police Department wrote in a statement Monday that a 26-year-old man and a 50-year-old man with gunshot wounds arrived at Memorial Hospital shortly after a 911 hang-up call 12:40 p.m. Monday.

The men were shot in the area of the West Phesantwood apartment complex, according to the statement.

The 26-year-old had multiple gunshot wounds and was in critical condition. Detectives believe the 26-year-old was targeted and the 50-year-old was struck by a bullet while walking along Illinois 161 near West Phesantwood. The 50-year-old’s condition was stable.

Both men were transferred from Memorial to a St. Louis hospital.

“Officers located evidence of a shooting that occurred in a parking lot and located forced entry to an apartment nearby,” the Belleville Police Department said of the scene.

Detectives are “pursuing several leads,” according to the statement.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Belleville Police Department at 618-234-1212 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477.
