Coroner IDs Cahokia man whose death is being called suspicious by police

Police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death of a Cahokia man who had a gunshot wound and was found dead in his home.

The victim was identified as Jeffrey Chester, 54, of the 1000 block of St. Margaret, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said.

Dye said Chester was pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Chester had lived in the residence for 20 years. Cahokia Police Capt. Dennis Plew said that’s where officers found the man’s body Saturday.

“We found the victim in his home with a single gunshot wound,” Plew said. “Right now we are investigating this case as a suspicious death,” Plew said.

An autopsy is planned, Plew said.

No other details were immediately available from Cahokia police.
