Victim identified, charges filed after weekend homicide in Granite City

Murder charges were filed Monday by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office in connection with a fatal weekend shooting in Granite City.

Sean Bennett, 44, of Madison, was arrested Saturday after the alleged homicide and now faces seven felony counts, including three counts of first degree murder, armed robbery, use of a stolen firearm in the commission of an offense, unlawful possession of a stolen firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Bond for Bennett was set at $2 million. As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at the Granite City Police Department awaiting transport to the Madison County Jail.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting on the 2300 block of Edwards St. in Granite City at approximately 8:38 p.m. on Saturday, according to a press release from Granite City Police. Cory Ayers, 48, of Granite City was found “in grave condition” at the scene and pronounced dead of his injuries shortly after the incident.

Granite City Police would provide no other information, pending the ongoing investigation.
