One of the two men injured in a crash in Madison Friday has died and police are conducting a homicide investigation, the police chief said Monday.

Other information about the case, including the victim’s name and cause of death, was not released, according to a statement from Police Chief Jeffery Bridick.

Bridick said the victim died Sunday night in a St. Louis hospital.

Investigators have found evidence that there may have been gunshots fired prior to or after the crash, according to a news release from Bridick on Saturday.

Bridick said persons of interest have been identified and police are trying to find them.

Police received a call about a single-vehicle crash at 5:43 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Washington Avenue and 10th Street. The car had hit a tree at apparently a “high rate of speed,” according to the news release.

Someone called the police at 5:45 p.m. to say they heard gunshots before the crash.

The driver of the car had to be removed from the vehicle by firefighters and he was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was transported to a hospital in an ambulance.

The fire department has said one of the men was shot.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.

Bridick asked that anyone who has information relating to this incident to contact the Madison Police Department at 618-876-4300.
