Update 2/3/25: Information has been added regarding the suspect’s arrest and employment status.

A firefighter from Roxana faces charges that accuse him of stealing $4,185 from Guns ’N Hoses, which raises money for the families of first responders who are killed in the line of duty in the St. Louis area.

Jacob A. Sanders, 27, was charged with two counts of felony theft Friday, according to court records.

Guns ’N Hoses features boxing and mixed martial arts matches between firefighters and police officers each year on the night before Thanksgiving. The proceeds are donated to the Backstoppers.

“Allegations of theft from charitable organizations are always disappointing,” Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine said in a news release Friday. “Contributions to this organization are made in good faith by members of our community to support a noble cause – aiding the families and children of first-responders who have made ultimate sacrifices.”

Madison County court records do not list a defense attorney for Sanders.

The case was investigated by the Roxana Police Department, which worked with organizers of the charity.

Sanders, who is a firefighter paid per call with the South Roxana Fire Protection District, was provided with advance tickets to sell for the Guns ’N Hoses event held Nov. 27 “but did not turn in the proceeds from the sales,” according to the news release.

Roxana Police Chief William Cunningham said Sanders was arrested Friday and released after being booked in the village’s jail.

South Roxana Fire Chief Tim Dyer said Sanders has been placed on administrative leave.
