Fairview Heights teen charged with murder in shooting death of man waiting for a bus

A 17-year-old boy from Fairview Heights has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a man in East St. Louis Sunday.

Cicero Maple, 41, of Cahokia Heights, was shot multiple times while standing at a bus stop in the 2500 block of Bond Ave., according to Illinois State Police. He was transported to Touchette Regional Hospital in Cahokia Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 10:13 p.m. Sunday, said St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Special agents from Illinois State Police were called to assist East St. Louis police in the investigation of the shooting. Evidence was presented to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric and charges were filed Wednesday.

The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, is being held at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center.

Maple’s death is the ninth homicide reported in the Belleville News-Democrat in East St. Louis in 2025.
