Man charged in shooting of Cahokia Heights 11-year-old
A Cahokia Heights man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old Cahokia Heights boy.
Jeremiah A. Johnson, 33, of Goodman Drive in Cahokia Heights was charged by St. Clair County State’s Attorney Jim Gomric’s office Wednesday with aggravated battery, mob action and obstructing justice.
The charges stem from the shooting, which occurred Monday near the 1600 block of Andrews Drive.
The victim was riding his bicycle when he was struck in the head by a bullet at about 3:25 p.m., according to the charges. Cahokia Heights Police called in the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to assist with the investigation.
According to the charges, Johnson also threatened another man with a gun and obstructed justice by knowingly destroying evidence and giving police investigators false information while he was being questioned.
A pre-trial detention petition filed by Gomric’s office asks the judge to deny Johnson release until trial. That hearing has not yet been scheduled.
The child remains in critical condition at a local hospital, police said.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
