Child shot in Cahokia Heights, Major Case Squad activated
Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice confirmed the shooting of a child Monday afternoon, but is sharing few details pending an investigation by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.
Trice said Cahokia Heights Police received the call of shots fired “in the vicinity” of the 1600 block of Andrews Drive at about 3:29 p.m.
The Major Case Squad, an elite unit of investigators from police agencies across the St. Louis region, was called into to spearhead the investigation, Trice said. Lt. Tim Lawrence of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department is deputy commander for this investigation.
According to a release from the Major Case Squad Tuesday morning, the victim is 11 years old and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
Anyone who has information about the shooting is asked to call 618-332-4277 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
This is the second time inside of a week that a child was struck by gunfire.
A 12-year-old was hit by “a random bullet” shortly after 6 p.m. on July 12, Trice said. Officers have followed several leads and identified a “person of interest,” but no updates have been released.
