State police issue tickets in crash of metro-east police car and SUV

A Washington Park Police officer’s squad car was struck by another motorist’s SUV when the officer entered the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and Illinois 111, Illinois State Police said.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

Illinois State Police agents with Troop 8 of Collinsville responded to a report of a crash with injuries at the intersection of Illinois 111 and St. Clair Avenue in Washington Park at approximately 9:06 p.m. Tuesday, a news release from ISP said.

According to ISP’s preliminary investigation findings, the driver of an SUV was at fault.

The Washington Park police officer, whose name was not released, had his emergency lights activated and was traveling east on St. Clair Avenue. The other driver, who also was not identified by police, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe north on Illinois 111, which is also known as Kingshighway.

Both vehicles entered the intersection and the front of the Chevrolet Tahoe struck the side of the police squad car, causing it to roll over.

The driver of the Tahoe was given a ticket for disobeying a traffic control device and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

No medical condition was available on the drivers, the ISP news release said.

No further information pertaining to the crash was available.
