Authorities have identified the man who was struck and killed by a vehicle in St. Clair County early Sunday.

Harold Schaedler, 49, whose last known address was on Revere Drive in Belleville, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said Tuesday. Dye said the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Schaedler has not been found.

Cahokia Heights police responded to a report of a man lying in the roadway on Illinois Route 157, just south of Foley Drive, at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, according to Police Chief Thomas Trice. Officers arrived to find Schaedler with severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crime scene investigators and Cahokia Heights detectives responded to the incident.

Trice declined to speculate on what caused the driver to strike Schaedler. “I’m not sure,” he said. “The incident is still under investigation.”
