An O’Fallon Police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man after two stabbing victims were spotted running from him Friday night, Illinois State Police said.

O’Fallon officers responded to the 600 block of West Madison Street at about 7:43 p.m. Friday in response to a call about a man armed with a knife. They “saw two people covered with blood running from a man armed with a knife outside the residence,” according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

Officers engaged with the man, who refused to drop the knife, the release stated. An officer discharged their service weapon, striking the man fatally, it said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two victims were transported to a hospital with non-life threatening cuts and stab wounds. The officer, whose name was not released, was not injured.

The O’Fallon Police Department said in a statement that, per state law and departmental policy, it asked Illinois State Police to investigate the shooting.

Illinois State Police said it will turn over all reports to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, which would decide whether charges would be filed.

No other information about the shooting was released.
