Shooting suspect took his own life during arrest, Troy police say
A shooting suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while being confronted by police officers Friday morning, Troy Police Chief Chris Wasser said.
A juvenile female is in custody as police continue to investigate, according to a department news release. The shooting victim fled the scene to the Circle K gas station at 536 Edwardsville Road, where he approached officers and described what happened. Officers administered first aid, and Troy EMS transported him to an area hospital for additional treatment, Wasser said.
Police have not released the nature or severity of the victim’s wounds.
Wasser said the victim told police he had arranged to meet a female he met online. At the agreed-upon location, an armed 23-year-old man who accompanied the girl shot the victim and demanded his money and cellphone. After complying, the victim fled to the gas station and met the officers at about 1:12 a.m.
With assistance from another department’s K-9 unit, officers tracked the suspects to a home on Orchard Court, according to the release.
Police detained the girl immediately during a search of the home. As officers approached a closet where the male suspect was hiding, he shot himself with a handgun. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Police have not released his name, pending notification of family.
Wasser said no further information will be made available as the investigation continues.
